To the modern eye, the Eads Bridge is an undisputed triumph. Completed in 1874, it stands as the world’s first major steel-arch bridge, a marvel designed by the genius self-taught engineer James Buchanan Eads. It connected St. Louis, Missouri, to East St. Louis, Illinois, forever altering American rail transport and westward expansion.
Yet, the handwritten label on this photograph hints at a darker, forgotten narrative. Was there a catastrophic structural collapse erased from history books? Or does the true "disaster" of the Eads Bridge lie in the hidden cost paid by the hands that built it?
The Impossible Challenge
To understand the perils of the Eads Bridge, one must understand the relentless river beneath it. In the late 1860s, constructing a bridge across the Mississippi River at St. Louis was widely considered an impossible feat. Powerful riverboat lobbies—fearful of losing their monopoly to the transcontinental railroads—successfully pressured legislators to impose brutal construction mandates. The bridge had to feature unprecedentedly long spans and immense vertical clearance so steamboats could pass unhindered.
Adding to the complexity, the riverbed consisted of shifting, treacherous sands. Eads knew that to support the millions of pounds of stone and alloy steel needed for the arches, the bridge’s massive masonry piers could not simply sit on the river floor—they had to be anchored directly onto solid bedrock, situated nearly 100 feet beneath the water and sediment.
Descending into the Caissons
To reach the bedrock, Eads used massive, open-bottomed iron chambers known as pneumatic caissons. These multi-ton boxes were sunk to the bottom of the riverbed, and compressed air was pumped inside to force the water out, allowing men to work on the river floor dry-shod.
Day after day, laborers known as "sandhogs" descended deep into these claustrophobic, air-pressurized chambers to shovel mud and debris. Above them sat thousands of tons of stone pier, driving the caisson deeper and deeper into the riverbed.
The environment inside was surreal. The dense air made speaking exhausting, high-pitched whistles impossible, and candle flames burn with blinding intensity. But the real danger wasn’t the darkness or the pressure itself—it was the ascent.
The Sickness from the Depths
As men completed their gruelling shifts and climbed back up to the surface, horror struck. Men who stepped out of the airlocks feeling fine were suddenly seized by excruciating joint pain, severe abdominal cramping, paralysis, dizziness, and blindness. Some collapsed instantly, gasping for air before passing away on the riverbanks.
At the time, medical science had no understanding of what was happening. The affliction was dubbed "caisson disease" or "the bends"—a colloquial reference to a popular Victorian dance pose where women stooped at the waist, mimicking the painful, contorted posture of the stricken workers.
We now know that working under hyperbaric conditions forces nitrogen to dissolve into human blood and tissue. When a worker returned to normal atmospheric pressure too quickly, the dissolved nitrogen expanded into tiny gaseous bubbles in their bloodstream, acting like shaken soda fizz tearing through organs and blocking blood flow.
Out of the hundreds of men who ventured into the Eads Bridge caissons, 77 fell severely ill, two were permanently disabled, and 15 lost their lives. James Moran, an Irish immigrant labourer, became one of the first officially documented fatalities of decompression sickness in human history.
Financial Ruin and Structural Scepticism
The human loss was not the only disaster surrounding the project. As the construction stretched on, the sheer cost of pioneer steel manufacturing and deep-water masonry skyrocketed toward $10 million. The massive financial strain eventually plunged the original bridge company into bankruptcy shortly after completion, sending shockwaves through the financial sector and contributing to major regional bank failures.
Public fear also plagued the project. The bridge was constructed without temporary timber scaffolding (falsework) in the middle of the river to keep shipping lanes open. Seeing the heavy steel arches suspended over thin air unnerved the public. Sceptics insisted that a structure built of this new-fangled "steel" would collapse the moment a heavy locomotive rolled across it.
To dispel the rumors, Eads staged two famous public tests in June and July of 1874. First, a circus elephant named John Robinson was led across the wagon deck, playing on a popular 19th-century superstition that elephants possessed an innate instinct to refuse to set foot on unsound bridges. Weeks later, 14 massive steam locomotives weighing a collective 550 tons were driven across the spans simultaneously before a crowd of thousands. The bridge didn't budge an inch.
Revaluating the "Disaster"
Looking closely at the archival photograph, the word "disaster" takes on a complex meaning. The structure itself never collapsed; in fact, it proved so sturdy that it survived the devastating St. Louis Tornado of 1896 and remains in active service today, carrying rail and highway traffic over 150 years later.
The true disaster wasn't a flaw in steel or stone, but the tragic, invisible toll exacted on human lives during the march of industrial progress. The suffering of the caisson workers on the Eads Bridge eventually led to crucial medical breakthroughs in decompression procedures, helping protect future generations of deep-sea divers and tunnel diggers worldwide.
